Loss prevention

Overview

To help retailers reduce shrinkage and ensure compliance with store policies, shopreme snap cart includes robust and configurable loss prevention mechanisms. These systems are designed to detect potential fraud, reduce accidental omissions, and support staff in maintaining oversight—without creating friction for honest customers.

At the heart of this is the spot check system, supported by computer vision and AI-based product recognition, depending on the hardware used. These features allow snap carts to react dynamically to suspicious behavior and enforce verification before payment.

Spot check functionality

The spot check feature allows retailers to intervene selectively when the system detects potential risk. The shopreme backend lets retailers define when and how spot checks should be triggered. These rules can be based on configurable logic, such as:

  • Basket size or value

  • Product information (e.g., products of a specific category)

  • Customer behavior history

The spot check status is shown clearly on the tablet screen, right before payment, with guidance for both the shopper and the supervising staff.

Computer vision and AI-based detection

If the snap cart hardware includes one or more cameras pointing into the basket, the system can go a step further by using AI and computer vision to identify unscanned items.

When the camera detects a product being placed into the cart, the app attempts to recognize it. The detection workflow functions as follows:

Product added to the cart without scanning

If the system detects that an item has been placed in the cart without scanning it first, a notification is shown to the shopper. This message asks the customer to remove the item, scan it manually, and place it back into the basket.

In this scenario, it is possible and recommended to automatically select the purchase for a spot check. This ensures that unresolved anomalies are reviewed by staff before the transaction can be completed.

Notification appearance

The AI-powered feedback always appears as a bottom sheet pop-up overlaying the main Scan & Go interface. It does not block interaction but ensures high visibility. This allows for a responsive and minimally invasive user experience.

This gentle nudge helps remind customers to scan every item, even if they forgot initially.

AI-recognized products

It is possible to use a trained AI model to match a product added to the cart with product information. If this is available, a bottom sheet notification appears on the tablet. This shows:

  • An image of the recognized product

  • The product name and other relevant information

  • A reminder to scan it before continuing

This feature availability is dependent on hardware capabilities and the AI model needs to be improved by the retailer.

Configuration and customizability

All loss prevention features are configurable through the shopreme backend. Retailers can:

  • Set thresholds and conditions for when spot checks should occur.

  • Enable or disable AI detection based on hardware support.

  • Monitor employee compliance metrics on the shopreme Management Console.

These options give retailers control over the balance between security and user experience, allowing for gradual rollout and fine-tuning over time.
